The End of the Line

The train grinds to a sudden, screeching halt in the middle of a dense forest of dates and acacias. You are at the hamlet of Kholby, miles from your destination. The conductor announces, "Passengers will get out here! The railway isn't finished!"

Phileas Fogg looks at his watch. He is perfectly calm, despite the chaos around him. Sir Francis Cromarty is furious, but the conductor explains there is a 50-mile gap in the tracks before the line resumes at Allahabad.

"Mr. Fogg, this is a delay greatly to your disadvantage," says Sir Francis.

"No, Sir Francis; it was foreseen," Fogg replies coolly. "We must find other means of transport."

Searching the village, Passepartout discovers an elephant named Kiouni. The owner knows the value of his beast and refuses every offer until Fogg proposes an astronomical sum.
