The Formless Army

You stand atop the wooden command tower, looking down upon the valley of dust and iron. Ten thousand men stand in formation, their spears like a forest of bamboo. Facing you across the plain is the army of General P'ang—thirty thousand strong, a terrifying sea of red banners.
Your lieutenant, Li, looks nervous. "General, they outnumber us three to one. If we try to command so many men individually, chaos will ensue. How can we possibly coordinate a defense?"
You recall the Master's teaching: The control of a large force is the same principle as the control of a few men: it is merely a question of dividing up their numbers.
The enemy drums are beating. You must organize your army immediately before the assault begins.
