The Elder's Last Word
The cell is small and filled with the scent of incense and impending mortality. Elder Zossima, the man you revere above all others, sits in his armchair, weak but bright-eyed. He knows his time is short. He looks at you with infinite kindness.
"Listen to me, Alexey," he whispers, his voice trembling but steady. "This is my last gift to you. You must leave these walls. You will live like a monk in the world. You will have many enemies, but even your foes will love you. Life will bring you many misfortunes, but you will find your happiness in them."
He grips your hand. "Make haste to find your brother Dmitri. I bowed down yesterday to the great suffering in store for him. Go now. Don't weep for me yet."
