The Stray Paper

You are Francis Wayland Thurston. Following the mysterious death of your grand-uncle, Professor Angell, you have been plagued by his unfinished research regarding the so-called Cthulhu Cult. You had largely given up the inquiry, hoping to return to a normal life.
However, fate has other plans. While visiting a mineralogist friend in Paterson, New Jersey, your eye catches a piece of old shelf-paper used to wrap a specimen. It is a copy of the Sydney Bulletin from April 18, 1925.
There, staring up at you from the crumpled newsprint, is a grainy half-tone picture of a stone image—hideous and familiar. It is identical to the idol your uncle possessed. The headline reads: MYSTERY DERELICT FOUND AT SEA.
