You are Dr. John Seward. The case of your patient, Renfield, grows stranger by the day—he rants about a "Master" and the consumption of life. But your heart lies elsewhere, at Hillingham, where the woman you love, Lucy Westenra, is fading away from a mysterious ailment.
Your old mentor, Professor Van Helsing, has arrived from Amsterdam at your request. He examines Lucy with a grim expression, noting her chalky pallor and the difficulty she has breathing. He pulls you into the hallway, his face set like marble.
"My God!" he whispers. "This is dreadful. There is no time to be lost. She will die for sheer want of blood to keep the heart's action as it should be."
He prepares his instruments. A transfusion is necessary immediately.
