Auerbach's Cellar

You are Faust. Having signed a pact with the devil Mephistopheles in blood, you have left your dusty study to experience the world. Your guide has whisked you away on a magic cloak to Auerbach's Cellar in Leipzig, a loud tavern filled with shouting students and drunkards.

Mephistopheles seems in his element. He bores holes into the wooden table, and from the dry wood flows fine wine—Rhenish, Champagne, Tokay. The crowd cheers, but when a drop spills, it turns to fire. The mood shifts from joy to terror as the drunkards draw their knives against the "sorcerer."

Mephistopheles laughs, casting a spell to confuse their senses, making them see vineyards and grapes instead of noses to pull.

"False word and form of air, Change place, and sense ensnare!" he chants.

Amidst the chaos and cheap magic tricks, you feel a sense of detachment.
