The room at the Plaza Hotel is stifling. It is four o'clock on the hottest day of the summer. The windows are open, admitting only gusts of hot shrubbery from the Park.

You, Nick Carraway, stand amidst the tension. Gatsby and Tom Buchanan are circling each other like prize fighters. Daisy is terrified, her voice struggling against the heat.

Tom slams his hand on the table. "I want to know what Mr. Gatsby has to tell me."

"Your wife doesn't love you," Gatsby says suddenly. "She's never loved you. She loves me."

The air is thick with impending violence. Tom looks as if he has been hit. Daisy stares blindly between them.
