The winter snows have melted, and the March sun warms the Alm. You are Heidi, happy among the goats and flowers. But today, the peace is broken.
Your Aunt Dete has returned, wearing a hat with a feather and a long dress that sweeps the floor. She stands before your grandfather, the Alm-Uncle, with news that makes his eyes flash with anger.
"I have found a wonderful opportunity for Heidi," Dete announces. "Rich people in Frankfurt want a companion for their invalid daughter. It is a chance for her to make her fortune!"
Your grandfather thunderously refuses, telling Dete to leave. But Dete grabs your hand. "Come, Heidi! You will have good things you never dreamed of, and you can come back whenever you like."
