Baker Street is filled with the haze of Sherlock Holmes's tobacco smoke. Dr. Mortimer, a tall, nervous man, has just finished reading an ancient, crumbling manuscript aloud. It tells the terrifying tale of Hugo Baskerville, a wicked ancestor who was torn apart by a gigantic, spectral hound on the moors of Devonshire.

Now, Mortimer presents the modern facts: Sir Charles Baskerville has been found dead in the yew alley of his estate. No signs of violence, but his face was twisted in sheer terror. Near the body, Mortimer saw something the police missed.

"Mr. Holmes," Mortimer whispers, his voice trembling, "They were the footprints of a gigantic hound!"
