The fog lies thick against the windowpanes of Dr. Jekyll’s cabinet. You, Mr. Utterson, stand before the fire, looking down at your friend. Dr. Jekyll looks deathly sick; he does not rise to meet you, but holds out a cold hand.

The news of Sir Danvers Carew's murder by Edward Hyde is being cried by newsboys in the square outside.

"You have not been mad enough to hide this fellow?" you ask sternly.

"Utterson, I swear to God," cries the doctor, shuddering, "I will never set eyes on him again. I am done with him in this world. But I have received a letter from him. I am at a loss whether I should show it to the police. I place it in your hands."

The letter, signed by Edward Hyde, states that Jekyll need not worry for his safety, as Hyde has a sure means of escape.
