The afternoon sun filters through the thick canopy of the Seeonee hills. Baloo, the old brown bear, sits on his haunches, looking sternly at his pupil. Mowgli, the Man-cub, tries to look attentive, though his mind is wandering to the cool river.
"The jungle is large and the Cub is small," Baloo rumbles. "Let him think and be still. Tell me, Little Brother, what are the Master Words of the Jungle that I have taught thee this day?"
Bagheera the Black Panther stretches out on a nearby branch, purring softly as he watches the lesson. Mowgli knows he must answer correctly to show he is safe from the snakes, birds, and beasts.
