It is Christmas Eve. Outside, the December snow falls quietly; inside, the fire crackles, but the mood is somber. The four March sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy—sit knitting in the twilight. The carpet is faded, the furniture plain, but a pleasant atmosphere of home-peace pervades the room.
"Christmas won't be Christmas without any presents," grumbles Jo, lying on the rug.
"It's so dreadful to be poor!" sighs Meg, looking down at her old dress.
Thinking of your father far away at the war, and the hard winter ahead, Marmee has suggested no presents this year. But each of you has a dollar. The temptation to buy something for yourselves is strong.
