The First Wedding

Three years have passed since the war ended. The June roses are blooming over the porch of the March home, rejoicing in the sunshine. It is Meg's wedding day. She looks like a rose herself, wearing a dress she made, with lilies of the valley in her hair.

There are no grand ceremonies, just a gathering of those who love her. As she stands with John Brooke under the green arch, Jo tries hard not to cry, while Amy stands like a graceful statue. Laurie, the neighbor's grandson and family friend, beams mischievously.

After the simple festivities, Meg prepares to leave for her new home, the "Dove-cote."

"Don't feel that I am separated from you, Marmee dear," she whispers. "I shall come every day, father."

As the family watches Meg walk away with John, Jo feels a pang of loneliness. She, too, has dreams, but they are very different from Meg's domestic bliss.
