The strange events of the forest are over. The four young lovers—Lysander, Hermia, Demetrius, and Helena—have been found and their conflicts resolved. Now, back in the safety of the Palace of Athens, the wedding feast is over.
Duke Theseus and Hippolyta discuss the lovers' wild tales of fairies and magic flowers.
"'Tis strange, my Theseus, that these lovers speak of," Hippolyta muses.
Theseus shakes his head, smiling skeptically. "More strange than true. I never may believe these antique fables, nor these fairy toys. Lovers and madmen have such seething brains!"
He believes their story is merely a trick of the imagination.
