The Despair of Maximilian

The funeral is over. You have followed Maximilian Morrel to his home. The house is silent. You break a pane of glass to enter his room, fearing the worst.
Maximilian stands by his desk, his face pale, two pistols resting before him. He is preparing to join his beloved Valentine in death. You step forward, your presence commanding and severe.
"Maximilian," you say, "remove your hand from that weapon."
"Who are you to stop me?" he cries, tears in his eyes. "I have lost everything!"
You must stop him. To do so, you may have to reveal a secret you have kept for twenty years.
