The Death of Hope

For fourteen years, you have rotted in the dungeons of the Château d'If. Your only companion, the wise Abbé Faria, lies dead on his cot, sewn into a coarse canvas sack—the shroud of the prisoner. He was your mentor, your father figure, and the keeper of a secret fortune.

Now, you are truly alone. The jailers will return soon to bury him. As you stare at the sack, a desperate, terrifying idea takes root in your mind. The dead are the only ones who leave this fortress freely. If you wish to breathe the air of liberty again, you must take the place of the corpse.

Time is short. You hold the knife Faria made. You must decide now: will you risk a horrible death for a chance at freedom, or remain here and rot?
