The Man's Cub

It is a warm evening in the Seeonee hills. Father Wolf wakes from his day's rest, ready to hunt. Suddenly, the bushes rustle near the cave entrance. Father Wolf prepares to leap, but stops in mid-air!
Instead of a deer, a naked brown baby—a Man's Cub—stands there, holding onto a low branch. The baby looks up at the wolf and laughs, completely unafraid.
"Is that a man's cub?" asks Mother Wolf softly. "Bring it here."
Just then, a roar fills the valley. Shere Khan, the lame tiger, thrusts his great head into the cave entrance. "My quarry!" the tiger roars. "Its parents have run off. Give the man-cub to me!"
