The Forest in Peril

The wild geese fly over the vast forests of Kolmården. Below, the trees look sickly and bare, stripped of their needles. Nils Holgersson, riding on Morten the gander, looks down with worry.
They land near a game-keeper's lodge where an old, blind dog named Karr is resting. Karr tells Nils a sad story about his friend Grayskin the Elk and a terrible plague of nun moth caterpillars that has destroyed the forest.
"It is a sad time," Karr sighs. "The forest is dying, and my time is nearly done. But I wish I knew if my friend Grayskin is safe."
