The summer storm hangs heavy over the town where Oliver was born. Mr. Bumble, now the Master of the Workhouse, finds his new marriage to the former Mrs. Corney far less dignified than his old position as Beadle. He is miserable, henpecked, and stripped of his gold-laced coat.
In a dingy public house, seeking solace in gin-and-water, Bumble encounters a stranger with deep-set eyes and a nervous twitch—a man named Monks. Monks is hunting for information about a specific pauper: the old nurse, Sally, who attended Oliver Twist's mother on her deathbed.
Monks demands a meeting with Mrs. Bumble, who holds the dead nurse's secrets. They agree to meet the following night at a rotting warehouse by the river.
