The Nursery Window

The night-lights by the beds of the three children—Wendy, John, and Michael—blinked and went out. The nursery was dark and silent, save for the heavy breathing of the house. Mr. and Mrs. Darling had gone to a party, and even Nana the dog had been chained up in the yard, barking mournfully at the stars.

Suddenly, the window blew open. A small ball of light darted into the room, rummaging through drawers with the sound of golden bells. A moment later, a boy dropped onto the floor. It was Peter Pan. He had returned for his shadow, which Mrs. Darling had rolled up and put away. He found it, but when he tried to stick it back on with soap, it wouldn't hold. He sat on the floor and began to cry.

Wendy woke up. She wasn't alarmed to see a stranger crying on the nursery floor; she was only pleasantly interested.
