The Train to Herefordshire

You are Sherlock Holmes. Along with your faithful friend Dr. Watson, you are speeding west on a train toward Boscombe Valley. A young man, James McCarthy, has been accused of bludgeoning his father to death near a pool. The evidence is damning: they were seen arguing, and James was found with blood on his hands.

However, there are curious details. The father cried "Cooee!" before seeing his son, and his dying words were a mumbled reference to "a rat."

Watson looks up from the newspaper. "It looks like an open-and-shut case, Holmes. The son surely did it."

How do you respond?
