Someone must have been telling lies about Josef K., he knew he had done nothing wrong but, one morning, he was arrested.

Every day at eight in the morning he was brought his breakfast by Mrs. Grubach's cook, but today she didn't come. instead, a strange man entered the room. He was slim but firmly built, wearing a close-fitting black suit with many pockets, buckles, and buttons.

"Who are you?" K. asked, sitting half upright in bed. The man ignored the question. "You rang?" he replied casually. From the next room, laughter could be heard.

K. feels a mix of hunger and indignation. This is his thirtieth birthday. Is this a joke by his colleagues at the bank?
