The Hero Returns

The village of St. Petersburg is in a frenzy of joy. Bells are ringing, and people are dancing in the streets! You, Tom Sawyer, and Becky Thatcher have miraculously returned from the depths of McDougal's Cave after three days of being lost.
You are weak and tired, lying on a sofa in the Thatcher home, surrounded by admiring townspeople. You tell your story, embellishing it just a little to make it sound even more heroic. Judge Thatcher listens intently, looking proud.
About two weeks later, after you've recovered your strength, you go to visit Becky. The Judge welcomes you warmly and jokes, "I suppose you wouldn't like to go into that cave again, would you, Tom?"
