The situation aboard the Hispaniola is dire. The mutineers are in control. Captain Smollett, Squire Trelawney, and I have decided to abandon the ship and take our chances at the old stockade on the island.
We are loading the jolly-boat for our final trip to shore. We have already made several trips, but we need more supplies. The boat is small, and there are five grown men to carry.
"The gunwale is lipping astern," warns the Captain. "She's overloaded."
