You are the grey cub, fierce and curious. You have left the safety of the cave to drink at the stream. You are heavy with sleep after a night of hunting, and your guard is down.
Suddenly, you see them. Five strange creatures sitting silently on their haunches. They do not spring, they do not snarl. They just sit there, emanating a power you have never felt before. They are the Man-Animals.
A deep instinct freezes you in place. These are the Makers of Fire, the lords of living things. One of them stands up and walks toward you. He reaches down a hand—a hand that looks like doom hovering above you.
"Look! The white fangs!" the man laughs.
Your hair bristles. You are terrified, but you are also a wolf.
